Adkins Rollman Gallery - Artists John Adkins and Charlotte Rollman

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother’s Day is just a couple weeks away. If you are visiting Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains, don’t forget to visit the Adkins Rollman Gallery on the Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts loop.

Artists John Adkins and Charlotte Rollman shared their Mother’s Day Memories with me as I enjoyed viewing their latest Spring Paintings:

Charlotte… “When I was a kid, in early grade school, we used to walk to church. On Mother’s Day, you would always pick red roses to wear if your mother was still alive and wear white roses if your mother had passed away. We were all wearing red roses as both of my grandmothers were still alive. Red roses in front of our gallery still remind me of my mother although she has been gone a long time now.

John… “My mother was instrumental in encouraging my interest in art.  I was 13 years old when she hired a college student who was getting an art degree to teach me drawing and watercolor.  I found a hobby, and lifelong passion that has turned into a profession.  I continue to learn and develop my artistic abilities!  It all started with Mom!  I began painting and naturally I painted things Mom loved, one of my paintings was a basket with black eyed Susan’s with a pair of gloves.  Mother was the director of Northwest Alabama Regional Library which covered 5 counties!  That painting hung in her office for 14 years and then in her home.  She asked me to paint her a New Orleans courtyard painting and this is what I designed and painted; she loved it.  The other painting was “Yellow Pond Lilies” which she hung in her living room.  These are just a few of the paintings that I created for the woman that loved me first and understood me best.  She has been gone 10 years now and I still miss her, her voice, her laughter and most of all her encouragement and unconditional love.”
